Nail-Down and Glue-Down Installation

Nail-down installation is the traditional method for solid hardwood over a wood subfloor. On wide boards we often nail and glue together, which holds the plank flat and reduces the movement you would otherwise hear underfoot in a big room.

Where a room sits on concrete, such as a finished basement or a lower level built into the slope, engineered plank is glued down instead. Wide engineered boards are also more stable than wide solid ones, which matters in a room with a lot of glass and a lot of seasonal swing.

Sand and Finish Refinishing

Milton homes built in the 1990s and 2000s often have solid oak that has dulled rather than worn out. Sanding it back and refinishing changes the whole feel of a house, and a modern matte finish looks nothing like the glossy coat that was standard when these floors went in.

Acclimation

Wood moves with the humidity in your home, and a wide plank moves more than a narrow one. Once the store delivers your flooring it needs to sit in the rooms where it will be laid until its moisture content matches the house. We check it rather than guess, and tell you when to book the delivery.

Tear-Out & Subfloor Preparation

We lift the old floor, then check the subfloor for movement, squeaks and level. Flatness matters more with wide boards, so we take the high spots down and fill the dips before any new wood goes on. Screens across the openings stop dust reaching the rest of the house.

Installation

We set the layout so the run suits the room and the joints are staggered properly, then fasten the boards, gluing as well as nailing where wide planks call for it. On a site-finished floor we sand, apply your stain and build up the protective coats once everything is down.

Clean-Up

We refit the baseboards and thresholds, vacuum through the house, and load every offcut and empty box out with us, so the only thing left behind is the floor.
